Secret Missions, Quadrilaterals, Gratitude , and more!
We had another wonderful week here in First Grade filled with much learning and fun! And our first snow storm which made for some extra fun recess time!
On Monday we began a new unit in reading called Word Detectives. Students received a mysterious envelope with a note from the SSDA (Super Secret Detective Agency) and were challenged with completing some secret missions (all related to reading)! We accepted the challenge and have completed our first two missions!
During writing workshop we have been working hard to publish one of our favorite Small Moment stories and will complete that process after break. Students also did an On Demand writing assessment as we have come to the end of this unit.
In math we explored triangles and quadrilaterals with a fun math manipulative called Power Polygons. Students sorted and grouped triangles as well as quadrilaterals, learning some new vocabulary and rules about shapes along the way. This week marks the end of our geometry unit. Onto a new unit after break!
We ended the week with a big celebration of learning to mark the ending of the first bend of Our Community unit. All three first grade classes combined to travel through three different stations to take part in some fun activities. One group created paper dolls of important community helpers, another made fresh butter and sampled it, while the third group played a headband game where they had to figure out which community helper they were by asking each other questions.
And of course we had a wonderful Open House and Community Dinner put on by our amazing Chef, Danielle O’Leary. Thank you all for joining in if you were able! It was great to see so many families in our school again!
