First Grade Happenings from the week of October 24, 2022

10/24/22-10/28/22

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

* *Open House will be Wednesday, November 16 (PreK-1) and Thursday, November 17 (grades 2-4). The schedule for both nights will be: Tour classrooms 5:00-6:00, Dinner 5:30-7:00.

Another fun-filled week with lots of learning and discovering!  During our week we:

  • Had a Social Emotional Wellness lesson with Ms. Spaulding which focused on feelings we get from different situations and made faces with playdoh to show those emotions.

  • Practiced writing many short /a/ word families

  • Began our “Poetry Fridays” and started collecting poems and songs for our binders.  These will become familiar texts that can be read and enjoyed during our reading workshop.

  • Did a variety of “shape fill-ins” during math, including using more and fewer blocks to fill in the same shape, and discovering how many different ways we could create a hexagon using our pattern blocks

  • Had a school-wide celebration of Book Character Day

  • Learned about adding details to our small moment stories by asking ourselves question like how, what, when, why, and where?

  • Worked on stretching the sounds in words out as we are trying to write them

We read these two books and made text-to-text connections. We filled out the Venn diagram together as a group.

Doing our bus evacuation drill.

We finished up "Our Communities" booklets!  We are a part of many different communities!

Doing our Esti-Mystery for the week!  During these, we look at an image and make an estimation.  We are able to keep refining our estimates based on the clues that are revealed to us.

Our Social Emotional Wellness lesson with Ms. Spaulding focused on feelings and emotions, and how our body language can give clues to how others are feeling.

Lots of activities with shapes and pattern blocks during math this week!

At the end of the week, we did another text-to-text connection with these two books, and the first graders filled out their own Venn diagrams to compare the two books.
