Highlights From the Week of January 30, 2023

What a fun and special week this was!  Global Play Day was a huge success and so much fun!  The children shared, cooperated, problem-solved, and had a blast!  It was also World Read Aloud Day so we were able to meet (virtually) with Lita Judge, author of 35 books!  The students were treated to listening to her read two of her stories and ended with a Q & A session.  Such a special treat!

During reading, we continued learning about nonfiction text features (maps and headings) and also learned about the suffix -s.  On Thursday we celebrated Groundhog day by reading a fun and fact-filled book about groundhogs (also known as woodchucks and whistlepigs!).

Our math learning focused on counting and writing numbers on our number strips.  How high can we write our numbers?! We also started learning about balanced equations, what the equal sign really means (“the same as”), and how to figure out if an equation is true or false.  Hard work!

Have you ever heard of Pebble Go?  It is a wonderful website that is kind of like an encyclopedia for kids!  First graders were introduced to it this week and explored the animal section as they get ready to choose an animal that they will do research on and then write about.
