Highlights From the Week of September 26, 2022

 9/26/22 - 9/30/22


ANNOUNCEMENTS:

* Open House will be Wednesday, November 16 (PreK-1) and Thursday, November 17 (2-4)

Schedule for both nights: Tour classrooms 5:00-6:00, Dinner 5:30-7:00 

** Remember to send in a binder for your student. We will be starting to add poems next week!

***There will be NO school on Friday, October 7th, and Monday, October 10th. 

****Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place during the weeks of October 11th and October 17th. For those who have signed up, be on the lookout for a conference confirmation next week. 



  • Learned about “Starting Corner” capital letters and practiced writing them correctly

  • Reviewed the Vowels and practiced their short sounds 

  • Learned a “cool” vowel song! (We are the vowels and we are cool, A, E, I, O, U. You learn about us when you come to school, A, E, I, O, U,...)

  • Created classroom Rules and Expectations in order to help create a kind, safe community in our classroom where everyone can learn and achieve their goals

  • Made a Thumbprint Promise to try our best to follow our new rules and expectations

  • Learned new strategies for solving story problems in math

  • Started learning about and practicing subtraction and counting backward 

  • Our caterpillars have completed their transformation into beautiful monarch butterflies! Our classes came together to release them and sing a song as they departed for their long migration trip 

  • Began our first writing unit “Small Moments” which focuses on learning how to write personal narratives

  • Started brainstorming ideas for small moments that we could write about

  • Began learning about “Just Right Books” and tried to choose some for our personal book bins

  • Learned about taking a “sneak peak” and “checking our sneak peak” during reading workshop

  • Read “The Little Blue Engine that Could” and had a wonderful discussion about believing in ourselves and saying “I think I can…” when trying to do things that feel hard.  We drew and wrote about something that feels hard to us and practiced saying “I think I can, I think I can…”

  • Had a Social and Emotional Wellness lesson with Ms. Spaulding and learned about our brain as well as ways of interacting with others.

  • Started to learn about the Zones of Regulation  and how to regulate our emotions

  • All of the beautiful butterfly life cycle projects that our students did are on display in the library for everyone to see. If you are in the school, be sure to check them out.

Highlights from the week of September 19th 2022

ANNOUNCEMENTS

**Picture day is on Monday the 26th. Picture order envelopes went home with your child on Thursday.  

**Look for conference sign-up notes in your child’s home folder.  Parent/Teacher Conferences are coming up soon! 

***Students do not have school on Friday, October 7th and Monday, October 10th.


Our First graders are really starting to get our routines and expectations down!  We have continued to practice “whole body listening” and talk about why it is so important.  We also discussed our hopes and dreams, or personal goals, for our learning this year.  It was wonderful to hear what each student chose! 

We also did many other activities including: 


  • Drew monarch butterflies

  • Completed a project to showcase our Hopes and Dreams for this year in first grade

  • Finished learning about all four stages of the Monarch butterfly’s life cycle and made a beautiful model to show them all

  • Went to the Book Fair (thank you to all who donated money or books to our classrooms!!!  It is so appreciated!!)

  • Created a class Big Book called “All About Me” which features… US!! It involved drawing a self-portrait and writing some special information about ourselves. 

  • Continued working on counting and addition in math, and also started working on some story problems

  • Read some fantastic books including Leo the Lightning Bug, Incredible Me!, I Like  Myself, The Curious Garden, Rocket’s ABCs

  • Practiced and reviewed letters and sounds by doing whole body movements to go with each one

  • Had a school-wide celebration: Stuffy Day!
