What were we up to over the past week??  Lots!!  Check it out below!

We:

  • Read Skelton’s Hiccups, created our own skeletons, and wrote our own advice for how Skeleton should get rid of his hiccups! (on display in the hallway!)

  • Did some fun Halloween math and word work

  • Practiced our Power Words with some ghostwriting!

  • Learned how to use a set of questions to add details to our small moment stories

  • Started learning how to write an introduction to our stories by reading lots of mentor texts

  • During reading workshop we learned about making and paying attention to our mental images as a strategy to help with our comprehension

  • Read and added two more poems to our poetry binders

  • Started doing some sorting of shapes with a game called Guess My Secret Rule

  • Learned some new reading strategies (see in the photos below)

  • Had our first combined classroom celebration by watching Spookley the Pumpkin

  • Practiced the short vowel sounds with a focus on the letter e

Our most recent strategies for reading. Most importantly it must always make sense!!

Adding details to our writing and asking ourselves did we write a 1-star, 2-star or 3-star story?!

Can you Guess My Secret Rule?  What do these shapes have in common?

Drawing our most vivid mental images.  After listening to five different poems, first graders chose the one that gave them the most vivid mental image and drew what they saw in their minds.  It was fun to see how different the images were even for the same poems!

Reading our new poems together.

Some Halloween fun!
