Highlights from the week of May 8th
We have had a wonderful start to the month of May! Lots of learning and growing going on in our first-grade classroom!
Over the past week we:
- Explored character personality traits with Mean Jean, Wemberly, Franklin, and Katie Sue
- Discussed how characters' feelings can change throughout a story
- Continued working on our fiction stories, bringing our characters and stories alive by adding details such as dialogue, actions, feelings, and descriptions
- Met with a partner during Writing Workshop to share our stories and give constructive feedback
- Learned about the -ce spelling pattern during our word study (ace and ice)
- Learned a new W.O.W. word which was compassionate and came from the book The Lorax
- Discussed place value focusing on the 10s and 1s with some exploration of the 100s
- Used base ten blocks to build double-digit numbers
- Reviewed the sound that -ay usually makes at the end of a word through two spring poems called In May, and May I? I May (by Helen Moore)
- Had a Social Emotional Learning lesson with Ms. Spaulding and worked on doing positive self-talk when we are feeling upset, worried, or angry
- Started learning about the mystery of the Koa tree seed - we made three different models of seeds, tested out how they move from the branches to the ground and will continue and finish this lesson next week!
