Highlights from the Week of May 30,2023

Highlights from the Week of May 30, 2023

This week our first graders enjoyed another Mystery Guest Reader!  Each class was treated to listening to a story or two by the other kindergarten teacher - so Ms. Purvee’s class invited Ms. Darling in, and Mrs. Babineau’s class invited Mrs. Gilbar in!  It was such a treat!  And such fun stories!!

We finished our last math unit this week and have been continuing to work on place value concepts.  Next week we will be learning about Expanded Notation!

We learned a new W.O.W. this week which was vast.  This word is directly connected to our theme unit titled Patterns in the Sky.  We read a couple of books about the sun and the moon and learned about one pattern in the sky that can help us find our way if we are lost.  We learned that the sun always rises and sets in the same directions (or appears to rise and set, as we have also learned that the sun doesn’t actually move - it’s the earth that moves!).

We have started learning how to write about our opinions during Writing Workshop.  We watched an interactive video to help clarify the difference between a fact and an opinion and tried writing our first piece (very structured) about whether we prefer carrots or apples.  It was fun to share these and hear each others’ opinions!

As a celebration of completing our Fiction writing unit, both classes came together and shared their published pieces.  Such creative writers in first grade!
