Week of September 12th Highlights!

9/12/22 - 9/16/22

Announcement: The school Book Fair is next week! Students are able to go throughout the week after school with their adults, but each class will have an appointment during the week (Babineau- Tuesday the 20th at 9:45 and Purvee-  Wednesday the 21st at 1:10). Students are welcome to bring in money for the book fair, or they can create an e-wallet (described here). If you would like to donate to our classroom e-wallets, please click on your teacher’s name here: Mrs. Babineau’s Classroom Library and Ms. Purvee’s Classroom Library.  We look forward to exploring the vast selection of books Mrs. Wood has gotten from Scholastic this year!

Thank you for all of your continued support while our first graders have completed their first full week of school! It was a week filled with activities building our classroom community, watching the magical change of monarch caterpillars into chrysalises,

  • We learned about Frog Jump capital letters. These letters start at the top, you draw a big line down, and then have to pick up your pencil to go back to the top and finish the letter. The students loved this song about the Frog Jump capitals.

  • We have live Caterpillars in the classroom! All three caterpillars are now in the chrysalis stage of their life cycle! We cannot wait to see our beautiful butterflies emerge in a week or two!

  • We practiced whole body listening! Listening with our brains, ears, and bodies.

  • We have had our first Guidance lesson with Ms. Spaulding. Guidance is now called Social Emotional Learning to better describe the work that Mr. Spaulding is doing our classrooms. We discussed some of the things we will learn about this year in First Grade and played a fun game

  • We celebrated Dot Day by reading the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and discussing the idea of making our own unique mark on the world.

  •  During math this week we practiced lots of counting, did some addition, and compared numbers to figure out who had more.  The games we played to practice these skills were: Five in a Row and Double Compare,

  •  We learned about the three ways to read a book as well as what it means to read independently, which we call “read-to-self”. We can already tell we have 2 classrooms full of readers!!

  • Each classroom received some live monarch caterpillars to observe in the classroom!  Thank you to those families that were able to search and find some for us!  We worked on a project all week as we learned about the egg, caterpillar and chrysalis stages of its life.

  • Tuesday, September 20th will be our first school wide celebration. Please join us in celebrating Stuffy Day! We ask that students bring in one stuffy that is able to fit inside of their backpack. A reminder note will be going home on Monday as well.

  • We began doing Friday Letters!  Please look for your child’s Friday Letter notebook in their homefolder and read their letter to you!  The classes worked together to write a sentence highlighting something that they enjoyed learning about this week.  Each student worked hard to write their first letter and some even wrote their own unique sentences!  They did a fantastic job! PLEASE write a note back to them and return the notebook to school before next Friday. Thank you for your support with this!
